SYNTHESIS, CHARACTERIZATION AND ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY OF CHITOSAN 4-METHYLBENZALDEHYDE SCHIFF BASE
S. Sashikala* and S. Syed Shafi
Abstract Polymer is a greek word which means many pieces (pollameri). By definition it's a macromolecule (long molecule) which has been created by the reaction of many molecules called monomers. Biodegradable polymers have an innumerable uses in the biomedical field, particularly in the fields of tissue engineering, gene therapy, wound healing and drug delivery. In the present work, bio-polymeric Schiff base was prepared by reacting chitosan with 4-methylbenzaldehyde. The uncross linked derivative was characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, TGA, DSC, XRD and SEM and tested towards the cell uptake. The uncross linked chitosan Schiff base derivative was studied for its antimicrobial activities. Keywords: Schiff bases; Antifungal; Antibacterial; In vitro activity.
